Hope in the Stars

This past Sunday there was a total lunar eclipse. Contrary to a solar eclipse, a lunar eclipse takes place during the night when Earth blocks the Sun’s light from reaching Luna, our moon. This eclipse in particular is also known as the Super Blood Wolf Moon, so it has to be cool. Or at least, I wish it was.

Eclipses are not exciting, no matter how well the fake news media portrays them. Sure, the moon turns red instead of white, and it may seem to grow slightly, but it is still just a moon. Calling it a Super Blood Wolf Moon is disingenuous. It’s like calling a broken freezer a Covert Biological Terminator.
I’ve always wondered why people get excited over seeing any eclipse. When there was a solar eclipse two years ago over North America, all the science YouTube channels freaked out, thousands of people drove to an area of totality, and people made fortunes selling eclipse sunglasses. The day grew dark when the moon covered the Sun, just as the sky darkens when a cloud covers the Sun. I, too, was excited about the eclipse, but once it passed, nobody spoke about it.

Maybe eclipses are fun because we make them fun. We anticipate a rare cosmological event as having some importance in our lives. For some, it might—maybe it marks somebody’s first kiss, or first kid, or first job offer. Without the hype from everyone in the world about the alignment of a couple celestial bodies in space, it may not have the same beauty as it does for those that can celebrate the event.

I know that, when I viewed the lunar eclipse on January 20, 2019, I felt a connection to the stars, not really the moon. I sat on my patio, listening to music without headphones, looking out the clouds and the far away, dull stars. I could have gone out any night of the week and seen a similar vista, but the eclipse is what drew me outside.
I think the way to “win” at life, if there is such a thing, is to enjoy my excitement as well as the actual event. Sometimes, an eclipse is just a boring moon, but through the excitement I can pretend there is some grand change that will happen soon. Maybe that’s what a first job is like. Maybe attending a university is the same way. First serious relationship, first house, first child, first gray hair.
I should be hopeful and excited for the future. I don't want to become jaded.
